DEPARTMENT OF VETERANS AFFAIRS AMARILLO HEALTH CARE SYSTEM(PSYCHIATRY) SCOPE OF PRACTICEMENTAL HEALTH

SCOPE OF PRACTICE:All providers who are granted privileges in VA Amarillo Health Care System are allowed to provide, deliver and/or interpret professional services (within the scope of their license) in all care settings. It is understood that the requested privileges (as marked below) represent only the requested privileges in the areas in which the applicant believes he/she meets the applicable standards of education, training, Board Certification and demonstrated proficiencyCORE PRIVILEGES:All (PSYCHIATRY) who are granted privileges to provide, deliver and/or interpret are hereby granted the following core privileges:Psychiatry Core Privileges: Evaluate, diagnose, treat, provide consultation, and perform History and Physical examinations to adult patients presenting with mental, behavioral, addictive, or emotional disorders, e.g., psychoses, depression, anxiety disorders, substance abuse disorders, adjustment disorders, behavior modification, mental problems related to addictive disorders and thespecial and emotional problems related to addiction and substance abuse (alcoholism and other drug dependencies, such as psychoactive drug use and addiction,) utilizing all forms of psychological and social treatment including medications. Privileges include providing consultation with physicians in other fields regarding mental, behavioral, or emotional disorders, pharmacotherapy, psychotherapy, family therapy, behavior modification, and emergency psychiatry as well as the ordering of diagnostic, laboratory tests, and prescribing medications.Special Criteria: Compensation and Pension evaluation certification completed prior to performing Compensation and Pension examinations.MANDATORY TRAINING: completes all mandatory required training yearly.INTRODUCTION: Practice agreement between and Dr. of the VA Amarillo Healthcare System at

• Current certification or active participation in the examination process leading to certification in psychiatry by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology or the American Osteopathic Board of Neurology and Psychiatry,
• Successful completion of an Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) or American Osteopathic Association (AOA) accredited post-graduate training program in psychiatry.

  • Applicants for initial appointment must be able to demonstrate the provision of inpatient, outpatient, or consultative services for an adequate number of evaluations, assessments or interventions during the past 12 months, or demonstrate successful completion of a hospital-affiliated accredited residency, special clinical fellowship or research.
  • Applicants for renewal of clinical privileges must demonstrate competence and an adequate volume of experience and number of evaluations, assessments or interventions with acceptable results in the privileges requested for the past 24 months based on results of quality assessment/improvement activities and outcome.
  • Evidence of current ability to perform privileges requested is required of all applicants for renewal of privileges.
